Gearing Up for John Brown Sesquicentennial

John Brown
John Brown in 1859.
In the dark night of Sunday, October 16, 1859, five African Americans and 14 whites, led by a tall, bearded, old man, John Brown, trudged across the railroad bridge to Harpers Ferry, and into history. Our town is world famous because of that event. Go to the John Brown website for a complete listing of events: johnbrownsraid.org Events are being planned by the National Park and in four surrounding counties. For our part the town plans the following:
  • a town picnic at the Gazebo on October 17, with hot-dogs, entertainment, and reenactment
  • a display on the history of Harpers Ferry in the town’s section of the refurbished train station
  • an educational power-point program on Harpers Ferry in 1859 for schools, done by Mayor Addy
  • the play John Brown's Body, perfomed at Camp Hill Wesley United Methodist Church in September and October and at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Shepherdstown, in November. The play, based on the Pulizer Prize-winning poem by Stephen Vincent Benet is a powerful drama about John Brown and the Civil War. It was a sellout in the 1950's directed by charles Laughton and starring Tyrone Power, Raymond Massie, and Dame Jukith Anderson. It has seldom been performed since, and never in Harpers Ferry.
